We Are None Of Us Alone - NBC Life

Something from last night’s episode. Interesting…

We are none of us alone.
Even as we exhale, it is inhaled by others.
The light that shines upon me, shines upon my neighbor as well.
In this way, everything is connected to everything else.
In this way, I am connected to my friend even as I am connected to my enemy.
In this way, there is no difference between me, and my friend.
In this way, there is no difference between me, and my enemy.
We are none of us alone.

Do you know who wrote this ? Was is something that existed prior to the show or was it written for the show? I really liked it and was trying to google an author but all i found was you.

It seems that the phrase “everything is connected to everything else” was coined by Lenin. as for the other stuff.. I think it was written especially for the show. but, of course, if you can find evidence otherwise I’d be happy to know :)

Mel… I agree with Fox’s assessment, but I have no inside knowledge or anything. Thanks for stopping by you two!

Yes, I would also like to know if it has roots in some other version. It sort of sounds like a budhist tenent or something.

fwiw, it seems to be a very common opening line… with variations I’ve read through a quick google search in Judaism, Buddhism, Kabbalah, Christian Science, etc. :)

Anybody know that artist that performed the song at the end of that episode? Just curious. I have also been searching for the author of that poem. Will let you know if I find it.

it’s radiohead “you are all i need” from In Rainbows

take that back..i think it’s a different song, but i think it’s radiohead.

i think you’re right about it being radiohead “you are all i need”, it sounds the same but just at a lower octave in the show, i could be wrong though

I just wanted to add that I was immediately taken by the poem. Thank god for DVR (tivo if you don’t have digital cable) I had to rewind it like 2 times to write the poem down. I then used it for my life skills lecture.. good stuff

I am still trying to find that quote? Has anyone found out where it’s from?

Thanks for TiVo.. I have the whole thing..

    Juella,

I think from all educated guesses here, that it’s just something that was written for the show. Although if someone knows what audiobook Crews is listening to, that might be a place to start since it has the similar lines about exhaling and inhaling and how we are all connected.

The quote is attributed to a Chinese philosopher, Fushumongu, from the same basic period as Confucius (~500 BC).

When Charlie throws away his audiotape in episode 11 and picks it up at the end you can clearly see on the tape:

The Path to Zen - S.P. Thomas

Haven’t found anything of this guy jet.

I loved this quote so much I put it on my MySpace page. I too had to rewind the show to write it down. When I “googled” it, I found you guys. Awesome.
